The U.S. Forest Service Headquarters History Collection contains thousands of documents. A few selections are available online. These are organized by USFS region and accessed by the menu at left.

For understanding the history of the United States Forest Service, consider reading the books on this introductory bibliography.

The Forest Service has produced a new film on its history entitled: The Greatest Good: A Forest Service Centennial Film. DVD copies and a companion book are available from the Forest History Society.

Humboldt State University Library maintains an extensive online guide to U.S. Forest Service Publications.

The American Memories Project at the Library of Congress is an excellent resource for timelines and publications on the evolution of the conservation movement (1850-1920). Their electronic resources include The Fight for Conservation by Gifford Pinchot, and the full text of the Proceedings of a Conference of Governors held in 1908 at the White House.
