In 1892 President Benjamin Harrison established Afognak Forest and Fish Culture Reserve, a precursor to the Chugach National Forest. In 1902 President Theodore Roosevelt established Alexander Archipelago Forest Reserve, a precursor to the Tongass National Forest. Although these are the only two national forests in the Alaska Region (Region 10), they are the largest in the country.
