Primary Forest History Society Publications

The Forest History Society's publications include an amazingly wide variety of materials. Our Issues Series provides needed historical background on topics of current interest, and our magazine, newsletter, and quarterly journal attract members worldwide. Our more than 250 oral history interviews, 2 historic films, and numerous books are also available for purchase. Please explore this site further to introduce yourself to the interesting resources that FHS has to offer.

The Forest History Society's (FHS) mission weaves together three primary programs: (1) the identification and collection of primary source research materials; (2) the identification and publication of secondary sources of published scholarship; and (3) the dissemination of information that educates the public. Our goal of identifying and publishing scholarship in the fields of forest, conservation, and environmental history is met through the production of our own quarterly journal, books, oral history interviews, and Issues Series publications, and via our extension of financial, editorial, or research assistance to other authors publishing books in the same broad subject area. Our publication efforts are supported by the Lynn W. Day Endowment for Publications in Forest History and by funds from a Challenge Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Forest History Society-Supported Publications

While publication of its own resources is a primary goal of the Society, FHS also occasionally commissions or otherwise participates in the publication of books not published directly by the Society. Our research resources, editorial skills, or financial support have assisted the publication of books from such publishing houses as:

  • Carolina Academic Press
  • Duke University Press
  • Gale Group
  • Greenwood Publishing Goup, In.
  • Island Press
  • McGill-Queen's University Press
  • University of Georgia Press
  • University of Maine Press
  • University of Nebraska Press
  • University of Washington Press
