Image Caption: [Carl Alwin] Schenck, center, presides over a picnic in the field prepared by his wife, circa 1905. Students are milling around, and Mrs. Schenck appears behind her husband's elbow, mostly blocked by the student standing next to him. [Schenck (1868-1955) founded the Biltmore Forest School on George Vanderbilt's Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina, in 1898. The school closed in 1913.]
