Image ID:   FHS1121
Image Date:  08/06/1940
Image Title:  [Winton, Minnesota, in the Superior National Forest.]
Image Caption:  Aerial view of Winton, Minnesota, on Fall Lake. Last community north and start of canoe trips, jumping-off place for the wilderness. Formerly a thriving lumbering town, mills operating from about 1894 to 1920, in which year the last sawmill was dismantled. In 1900, peak year in the Minnesota lumber industry, 175,000,000 board feet of lumber was sawed in the mills at Tower, Ely, and Winton. Winton now would be a ghost town but for the summer recreational industry that has developed. Note the docks from which wilderness trips start out.
