Image ID: FHS1221
Image Date: 1910
Image Title: [View of clearcut redwood forest behind a California inn; 1910.]
Image Caption: The Scotia Inn, Humboldt County, California in 1910. All of the redwood trees on the hill behind the hotel have been removed by logging operations just prior to photographing. The area was burned repeatedly in an effort to establish grassland for a livestock-ranching operation. After several years these efforts were abandoned, since it was impossible to eradicate the redwood sprouts, even with cropping by sheep. The land then was left to regenerate a new redwood forest. [See image #FHS1222 for same view photographed in 1961.]
