Image Caption: This photograph shows a Columbia County, Oregon, area after virgin stand of Douglas fir had been harvested for lumber. This picture, made in 1928, shows stumps, snags and other logging waste of that era. In 1928 markets did not exist for many so-called waste materials. (Crown-Zellerbach-AFPI photo.)
