Caption 2: This is how a block cutting or "staggered settings" operation in an area of even-aged old timber looks from the air. Clumps of trees along the ridges in the background have been left to seed the patches from which 200-year-old timber has been removed. On average, 60 percent of the cut-over areas will be restocked in five years. Seed clumps are allowed to remain in place for about two years.
