FHS1238th

Image ID:  FHS1238
Image Date:  June 1938
Image Title:  [Aerial view of a forest that was block-cut by the White River Lumber Company.]
Image Caption:  Caption 1: White River Lumber Co. -- Looking up the Clearwater River. White River and Naches Pass Highway in foreground. [Washington State.]

Caption 2: This is how a block cutting or "staggered settings" operation in an area of even-aged old timber looks from the air. Clumps of trees along the ridges in the background have been left to seed the patches from which 200-year-old timber has been removed. On average, 60 percent of the cut-over areas will be restocked in five years. Seed clumps are allowed to remain in place for about two years.
