Image Title:  King Size Stump.
Image Caption:  Caption 1: The team of fallers who felled this giant Douglas fir are dwarfed by its stump. Cut close to the ground to avoid needless waste, this stump is an excellent example of the scientific resource-saving methods now practiced in most big woods operations.

Caption 2: Before it was cut this Douglas fir towered more than 200 feet in the air. Its stump measurement was 10 feet 6 inches. Long past maturity the tree probed to be honey-combed by rot. More than half its 60 thousand board feet content was unusable. Fallers spent 10 hours felling it. Trees should be harvested when they are mature to make way for younger growth.
