Image Title: Log drive.
Image Caption: Bill Engstrom caulking his boots. Rocks quickly wore the steel points off the caulks and without good footing a Jack has two strikes on him before ever attempting the perilous job of log driving. It was necessary to re-caulk as often as once a week to avoid becoming slick shod. Each man did the job himself. Holes in the outer sole of the boot, left by prying out the dulled caulk, were pegged full of wood, then the new caulk was driven into the wood. When the wood swelled because of moisture the caulk became an inseparable part of the boot.
