Growth comparison of longleaf and slash [pine] near Starke, Florida. March 1929. At the left is shown a longleaf pine (P. palustris Miller) and at the right a slash pine (P. caribaea Morelet). Note the difference in size of buds and length of needles. Needle length, type of bud, and cone are the main distinguishing characteristics for the two species.
