In its hundred-year history, the Forest Service has faced a multitude of resource management issues, from preventing a "timber famine" to preserving watersheds to protecting spotted owl habitats. Frome, Michael. The Forest Service. 2nd ed. Boulder, Colo.: Westview Press, 1984. xix + 364 p. Illustrations, maps, charts, appendixes, bibliography, index. Only the first chapter is devoted entirely to Forest Service history, but the rest of the book, which concerns USFS administration, policy, and issues, is marked by its historical perspective.
