In its hundred-year history, the Forest Service has faced a multitude of resource management issues, from preventing a "timber famine" to preserving watersheds to protecting spotted owl habitats. The books listed below provide general information on the history of these and other Forest Service topics. This is not meant to be a comprehensive bibliography, but a list of resources accessible in most larger university and government document libraries.

Davies, Gilbert W., and Florice M. Frank, eds. Forest Service Memories: Past Lives and Times in the United States Forest Service. Hat Creek, Calif.: HiStory ink Books, 1997. xxii + 624 pp. Photographs. Biographies, letters, poems, and essays by U.S. Forest Service employees describing the agency, its foresters, and its stewardship of land resources; 1891 to the present.

Frome, Michael. The Forest Service. 2nd ed. Boulder, Colo.: Westview Press, 1984. xix + 364 p. Illustrations, maps, charts, appendixes, bibliography, index. Only the first chapter is devoted entirely to Forest Service history, but the rest of the book, which concerns USFS administration, policy, and issues, is marked by its historical perspective.
