Inventory of the Natural Resources Council of America Records, 1946 - 1981
What is this document?
This document, which is called a "finding aid," describes an archival collection.
In the course of daily life, individuals, families, organizations, and businesses create and keep information about their
activities. When such records are no longer needed on a day-to-day basis, a portion judged to possess enduring historical
value may be preserved and maintained as archival collections. Archival records take many forms, including correspondence,
diaries, financial and legal documents, photographs, and sound recordings. Archival materials may also include maps, scientific
data, artifacts, and electronic records such as emails or databases.
Prepared by archival staff, finding aids provide a history of the person or organization that produced the collection, an
overview of the collection, and a detailed list of the collection's contents.
Finding aids are used by researchers to determine whether materials within a collection may be relevant to their research.
While not exhaustive, finding aids help researchers identify the particular boxes or folders that may hold items of interest.

Historical Note
The Natural Resources Council of America (NRCA), founded in 1947, is a private nonprofit group of national and regional organizations
concerned with the conservation of natural resources and the environment.
The Council was founded in 1947 when leaders of several conservation associations acknowledged the need for a central organization
that could provide a forum for shared understanding among conservation groups in America. Through periodic meetings, NRCA
publications, and special events, member organizations effectively communicate current policies and ideas about the wise use
of natural resources.
For further information about the history, purpose, and practices of the Natural Resources Council of America, see brief account
by Margaret Lorenz entitled "Natural Resources Council of America, 1947-1980." One might also consult Henry Clepper's brief historical sketch of NRCA (p. 469) in volume two of the Encyclopedia of American Forest and Conservation History (Richard C. Davis, ed. New York: Macmillan Publishing Company, 1983).
Collection Overview
These records are chiefly the files of Clinton Raymond Gutermuth (b. 1900), a founder, Secretary (1946-1957), and Chairman
(1959-1961) of the Natural Resources Council. Included are correspondence, typed and processed reports, memoranda, printed
and processed newsletters, lists of officers and members (1947-1965); bylaws, articles of incorporation, typed and mimeographed
minutes (1946-1971); special conferences, meeting notices, ballots, dues notices, general correspondence, form letters, mailing
lists, correspondence and memoranda relating to the organization of the Council and to conservation problems, committee files,
correspondence and agreements relating to publications, and photographs of members (1948-1963). Also includes "Executive News Service" reports (1968-1975) and "Legislative News Service" reports (1969-1977).
Collection Arrangement
Collection consists of such records as agendas, by-laws, correspondence, memos, membership lists, minutes of meetings, reports,
and telegrams. Records are filed in chronological order in thirteen manuscript boxes.
In April of 1998, NRCA "Legislative News Service" (1968-1977) and "Executive News Serves" reports (1968-1975) were pulled from the Forest History Society's Vertical Files and placed in the archives as the "Forest History Society Supplementary Materials to the NRCA Records." The supplementary reports are filed in three additional manuscript boxes, making a total of sixteen manuscript boxes of NRCA
materials.
