Teacher Institute in Environmental History

 

The Forest History Society will offer a Teacher Institute in Environmental History with guest speakers:

  • Dr. James Lewis, Staff Historian, Forest History Society
  • Dr. Timothy Silver, Environmental History Professor at Appalachian State
  • Larry Earley, Environmental Historian/Author
  • Dr. Norman Christensen, Founding Dean of the Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences.

The Teacher Institute is especially geared toward North Carolina middle school (grades 6-8) Social Studies teachers. This Environmental Education is not just for Science teachers any more! Learn more about our new and exciting If Trees Could Talk curriculum to introduce your students to Environmental History. Interesting discussion topics, hands-on activities, critical thinking skills, team teaching suggestions for other subjects, and much, much more are included in these free, on-line modules.

The Institute will also bring environmental topics to your social studies classroom, as well as introduce The Greatest Good , a Forest Service Centennial film. You will learn to use the film in conjunction with the If Trees Could Talk curriculum and hear from guest speakers on various Environmental History topics. By attending this institute you can receive 10 hours of Criteria III, Environmental Education (EE) credit to count toward certification, as well as a $150 stipend and other goodies to take back to your classroom.

 

Registration

 

Due to the overwhelming response to this Institute we are requesting that you fill out a registration form and return it to the Forest History Society by February 15, 2006 . We will review the forms and notify those candidates selected to participate in the Teacher Institute. Space is limited and we will allow those educators working directly with students in grades 6-8 social studies to participate first. Then it will be on a first come, first served basis.
