Environmental History Bibliography

For over 50 years the Forest History Society (FHS) has monitored the world of publishing for items written as history and dealing with the utilization, management, and appreciation of forest-related resources. Originally the information was kept on index cards, then in 1977 was published in North American Forest and Conservation History: A Bibliography by Ronald J. Fahl (Santa Barbara, Calif.: ABC-CLIO Press, 1977). Since the early 1980s FHS has maintained the bibliography in a computer database, which is continually updated and searchable on our web site.

Coverage and Scope of the FHS Environmental History Bibliography Database

The Bibliography contains over 40,000 annotated citations to books, articles, and dissertations published from 1633 to the present and is updated online quarterly. Approximately 1500 citations are added each year. Items are selected because they provide a historical perspective on such topics as:

Obtaining Materials Listed in the Bibliography

We learn about publications from many different sources, therefore the FHS library does not house all materials described in the Bibliography. To borrow books listed in the Bibliography, try locating them in your nearest university or large public library. If the libraries do not own the books themselves, they may be able to obtain them from another library through inter-library loan (ILL).
