Forest History Society Databases

The Forest History Society has six databases that are searchable on our website via InMagic's Presto software. All of the databases provide useful, detailed information about primary or secondary materials that aid research in the broad fields of forest, conservation, and environmental history.

Visit the links at left or the brief descriptions below to learn more about the scope, content, and organization of each of the databases and to search the databases individually.

You may also do a keyword search across all FHS databases for titles, authors, dates, and/or subjects. This works best with more specific search terms or combinations of terms; searching for broad terms like "forest history" will produce an unmanageable number of results.

Search A catalog of over 20,000 images digitized from the Society's Photograph Collection. Search results display thumbnail images along with descriptive cataloging information pertinent to each image.

Search A bibliography containing annotated descriptions of over 42,000 books, articles, and dissertations on topics in the fields of forest, conservation, and environmental history.

Search A catalog of the holdings of the U.S. Forest Service Headquarters History Collection housed at the Forest History Society.

Search The Society cooperates with other institutions, particularly in the United States and Canada, to save all historically significant records related to forest, conservation, and environmental history. Descriptions of records housed in over 450 repositories across North America and throughout the world are included in the Society's Environmental History Archival Collections Database.

Search A specialized bibliography on vegetation change in South and Southeast Asia compiled as a companion tool to the John Richards Collection of publications relating to the impact of tropical land use change on global atmospheric CO2 concentrations.

Search A catalog of the Forest History Society's Forests in Fiction Collection, a special collection of over 400 twentieth-century novels with settings and story lines focused on forested environments.

Search Assistance Available

If you don't find what you are looking for when searching any of our electronic databases, please feel free to contact the Society's Library Staff, who will be glad to perform custom searches of the databases on the main library computers and email the results to you.
